The mechanization and formalization of a handshake illustrate the « sense of ritual » in human interaction. This form, lacking warmth, also exposes a conditioned model of social interaction. The machine’s repetitive motion resembles my continual attempts to probe and approach within relationships, where the distance between us is repeatedly pulled in and out, creating an inescapable cycle of entanglement. This symbolic handshake seems to construct an illusion of intimacy.
